[17] And he said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me.

Honest Doubt and God’s Patient Assurance

Even after hearing God’s call and His promises, Gideon hesitated and asked for a sign to confirm it was truly the Lord speaking to him. Rather than rebuking Gideon, God answered his request for reassurance. Scripture distinguishes between stubborn unbelief and honest questioning that springs from a heart desiring to trust. The Lord is patient with our struggles and meets us where we are. Throughout the Bible, figures like Moses, Thomas, and others brought their doubts and uncertainties to God—and He responded with patience and affirmation. God never discourages sincere seeking; instead, He invites us to bring our questions into relationship with Him. Biblical faith is not the absence of doubt, but bringing our doubts honestly before a faithful God. When we do, God is faithful to build our confidence, guide our next steps, and draw us deeper into trust. God is not threatened by our honest questions; He uses them to transform our vulnerable uncertainties into stronger faith. Let your moments of uncertainty draw you closer to God and His promises.

Key Takeaway

God patiently reassures our honest doubts—bring your questions to Him in faith.

Questions to Consider

  1. What doubts or questions do you need to bring honestly before God?
  2. How has God responded to your struggle with uncertainty in the past?
  3. In what area of your life are you seeking God’s reassurance today?
